On my own equipment with a bluetooth reader Forscan connected just fine without the extended license. You can still get the extended license for free, but their suggestion not to bother unless you see a specific error message may not always be true. The licensing absolutely should not matter from everything I've read, but experience indicated otherwise. When you pay for the extended license Forscan or whoever will email you a code you need to enter into the box, copy and paste rather than type it to avoid errors. While none of the literature says anything about requiring an extended license for forscan to connect to a USB device, the application failed to connect on the default license.
